About this piece
Every petal is drawn twice. Once in pigment, once in gold line, so the flower reads as both a living thing and a diagram of one.
The lotus is the oldest shorthand there is for rising clean out of dark water. Here the water is a night sky and the smoke around it never quite settles, which felt closer to the truth. Nothing rises cleanly. It rises anyway.
