About this piece
Two cards on worn purple cloth, and the figure on the top one has climbed most of the way out of it.
The joker is the only card in the deck with no fixed value. It is whatever the game needs it to be, which makes it the most dangerous thing on the table and the least trusted. Painting him with feathers, a beaded collar and a face that is somewhere between ceremony and threat was the point: the trickster is a sacred office in most traditions and a punchline in this one.
The depth in this piece is real. The cards sit in space, lit from one side, and on a large canvas the edge of the top card reads almost like it is lifting off the wall.
